Daily Diagnosis: Spencer's Girlfriend Isn't What Expected

Fans of Spencer and Trina a.k.a Sprina were in for a surprise when just as the new lovebirds were about to kiss, in walked Spencer's girlfriend Esme Prince. To say fans were unhappy is an understatement.

Breakout character Trina Robinson as well as Emmy-nominated actress Sydeny Mikayla have earned a very loyal and protective fanbase. They wanted their girl to not have to stand aside again while the boy she liked chose someone else. I get the upset. Trina is a lovely young woman. She deserves better than being the other woman.

Trina is also a young black woman on a mostly white canvas. As fans have pointed out, it's upsetting to see her never get the win. "But the optics were not great with the only Black girl this show has had in decades being used as angst for mini-Carly." stated fan @Bri_Elyse1 on twitter. I agree. Soaps have a large black audience that they oddly don't seem to consider very much when making story choices.

I don't think this particular story is about Trina losing the guy. Or even having to fight for the guy. Spencer is very clearly into her. She's in the position to be the heroine and for Spencer to pursue her. The chemistry between Mikayla and Nicholas Chavez is strong enough to overcome the obstacles that are thrown their way.

As for Spencer, he's been a very bad boy but I don't think the story is that he intentionally mislead Trina. He didn't tell anyone he had a girlfriend and everyone assumed he was single. Trina's heart was broken when she discovered that the guy she liked had a girlfriend. We've all been through this. Young love is a messy thing. These sort of misunderstandings work for characters who are learning to become adults much more than for example 50-year-old Jason's endless stories about his confusion on how to respect his significant others. Jason should know better by now. Spencer is still learning.

Stalking Ava is a really horrible thing to do but I'm curious how much of the stalking is really Spencer and how much is Esme going rouge. He knew that setting Ava's car on fire crossed a line. Perhaps the only part he is guilty of is his fake blood prank at the Art Gallery. He doesn't quite grasp that Esme is a batshit psycho though which is where the story begins to not work for me. There's nothing seductive enough about Esme that would make his teenage hormones trump his common sense. General Hospital should have cast someone more Jessica Rabbit in the role. Casting can really make or break a story sometimes.

Esme looks like a brunette Nelle and maybe the idea was to recapture that type of over-the-top level of psycho. Been there, done that and it doesn't work for this particular story. Nelle was a unique character and should not be used as the standard for femme fatales.

There is also the online theory that Esme is connected to Dawn of Day and possibly related to Harmony and Willow. Yikes! Do. Not. Want. While pubescent, brunette appearance would make her visually fit as Willow's sister, Willow isn't a good enough character to justify giving her more family. Plus, the Dawn of Day story sucked.

What are your thoughts on Spencer's surprise girlfriend?
