Daily Diagnosis: How Do You Make A Bad Story Worse?

As we all know now, The Powers That Be at General Hospital have combined the Nixon Falls story with the Neverending Peter August Saga. The fans had a lot to say about that online...and nothing they had to say was particularly complimentary.

There really isn't a positive way to spin this latest turn of events. I suppose Hamilton Finn fans might be happy that the doctor is no longer a murderer but ridding the world of Peter was never something that I considered a bad deed. I guess I am happy that Finn won't be whining about it anymore so there is that.

Peter August was instantly disliked upon his introduction. He was a ill-conceived character whose very existence was based on the defiling of one of the soap's most beloved heroines. To paraphrase a wise man, the writers didn't know how to fix their mistake so they kept making it worse.

A good showrunner would have cut their losses with this character a long time ago. The actor was never a major soap star and certainly never became one in this role so the effort put forth to make him GH's main event for the last few years was really a waste of everyone's time.  To be quite blunt, this is a huge embarrassment for GH and will go down in soap opera history as one of the genre's biggest blunders.

While the villain's return seems to promise some mystery and adventure, I'm not sure any of that can make the audience feel better about seeing this hated character on GH again. The show was so much better without him. Viewer's didn't want a resolution to his story. We just wanted him gone.

How are you feeling about the return of Peter August?

  1. In all my years of watching soaps, I’m trying to remember a character so hated, in stories so bad, that lasted this long, and I can’t think of any. Sabrina was bad. Courtney too. But PLP is the worst. The damage he (and CVE) has done to GH is irreparable. He needs to disappear right now.
