Daily Diagnosis: Have It Really Been Jason and Carly This Whole Time?

General Hospital recently took a sharp turn with its narrative and declared Jason and Carly's unusual relationship a love affair. Fans have had some really strong opinions about this pairing to put it mildly.

My feelings regarding "Jarly" are a bit mixed. When Steve Burton made his return to GH a few years back, I was shipping it! The high romance moments were given to Jason and Carly rather than Jason and Sam or Carly and Sonny. He was her knight in shining armor and she was his queen. But story always stopped before things got too sexy. For example, after Jason's daring rescue of Carly from Ferncliff the duo shared a tender moment together at the safe house. Someone watching the show for the first time would have thought Jason and Carly were more than just friends for sure.

Jason and Carly's relationship has always been somewhere between the friend zone and soulmate. It has always made their other pairings a bit weird. I think we can all agree with Maurice Benard's father that Sonny should have taken issue with the coziness between his best friend and his wife. Jason's many lovers sure noticed that they were never going to be priority as long as Carly was around. 

The admission that Carly and Jason are in fact in love and have been this whole time sure kills a lot of the romantic ideals fans placed upon the couple's other pairings. For example, while it's clear that Jason did love Sam very much at one time, the story that is being told is that it never matched what he felt for Carly. This is a hard pill for some fans to swallow yet it is true to say that the story has always been that Jason put Carly first.

Personally, I think that Jason and Carly have had unsolved romantic feelings for each other that have been bottled up for decades and it makes sense for this to finally be addressed. The choice for Jason and Carly to fall into each other's arms now that Sonny is out of the picture makes sense given the journey both characters have taken together. This should be a great a story but some mistakes were made. 

After Sonny "died" the stories that were started for both Carly and Jason were much different. Fans had begun to invest in Carly as the "Godmother of Port Charles" as well as Jason and Britt's new attraction only to have the stories taken away from them before they even started. While it's possible that thing could circle back, viewers are currently left with no payoff and confused by the uneven plotting. Jason and Carly's wedding story would have been better received if the audience hadn't been unintentionally jerked around first.
