This week was the big week for General Hospital. Would Jason and Carly give into their returning feelings for one another? How would they react when they discovered that Sonny was alive? How would Sonny respond to finding that his wife and best friend had just tied the knot? Would he walk in on a romantic moment between the two? What happened was certainly unexpected and the viewers had a lot of thoughts about it.
Jason and Carly did not make passionate love after confessing their feelings for one another. Sonny did not explode with anger upon finding that the two people he trusts the most had come to the conclusion that they have been in love this whole time. Instead Sonny was pretty chill with Carly and Jason's sham marriage and after a round of hugs they all sat around recapping the mob storyline that had played out for the last several months.
That's right. After nearly a year of Sonny thinking he was "Mike" and after a two week long wedding ceremony in which Carly and Jason finally got to live out their ultimate "What If" fantasy, this was what the writers thought would be a good payoff - a recap episode.
Many viewers feel like they have been bait and switched. "Jarly" superfan @MouthySoapFan93 shared "Listen, I knew Jarly wasn't going to last long after Sonny's return, but I didn't expect the lack of drama with the reveal. I feel trolled." Fellow soap fan @Littlerobc tweeted "Worse reveal day EVER!! Sonny is alive...dud, Anna shoots Peter...we don't see it and he gets away, Finn and Liz find out Peter is alive...they talk about camping?!? Ugh #GH" GH fan and writer @BookGeekConfess shared her reaction after the big reveal that Sonny was alive, "That's it? #Jason is only sort of out of the jacket! Why have they forgotten what it means to be a soap opera?!? If I recall Jason walked in on #Carson literally in the act. #Sonny earned the same exact situation. #gh"
The critical response to the story has been mostly negative to say the least. Whether or not GH will consider it a success remains to be seen. The actors involved really put themselves out there to promote and mainstream press shared exclusive preview photos. Viewers were enticed to watch what they expected to be a scandalous moment unfold.
The trio of Jason, Carly and Sonny have a vocal fanbase who are probably perfectly happy just to have the three characters in a story together. Though it was not promoted that way, I do believe this story was less about shaking things up and more about just appealing to that specific group of fans. "Great episode couldn't wait for Sonny to get to the bedroom and open that door. The MOMENT we've all been waiting for! No your not dreaming Carly. Carly loves Jason but she's IN LOVE with Sonny." fan Rhonda raved on Facebook. I'm sure Rhonda is glad that Carly and Sonny will have minimal obstacles to overcome and that Jason can still be their best friend. The GH writers clearly set out to tell a story that would get them plenty of attention and praise from the one fanbase they feel is the most important and I do think they more or less accomplished that goal.
Personally, I thought the reveal was very poorly constructed and written. I needed a good payoff and reassurance that watching GH everyday is not a waste of my time. I was not given that.
What were your thoughts on Jason and Carly finding out that Sonny was alive and Sonny finding out that Jason and Carly got married?

ReplyDeleteLike Mouthy, I felt trolled. Honestly, it was the most boring reveal they could have done. LW kept saying how it we shouldn't FFd because it was gonna be a twist we weren't expecting. Clearly, her idea of a twist is majorly different than..well anyone else.
